BSc Forestry (US) MPhil Environmental Science (UCT) Registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner With EAPASA, Reg No: 2020/1486 Registered Ecologist And Environmental Scientist Pri Sci Nat SACNASP Reg No: 400050/98 Desireé is a passionate environmental scientist, with 30 years’ experience in environmental management. After ten years in the Cape Provincial Administration Nature Conservation Department, Desireé started consulting and established Ecosence. She left Ecosence and consulted on her own for another ten years. Thirty years’ experience has honed a wide range of skills in the fields of ecology, environmental planning and assessment. Acting as a facilitator between managers or clients, specialists and officials has mostly led to results that best suit both the environment and the client or manager. Mentorship is important for me and I have helped a few young people to improve their skills for successful careers.

Environmental Management Consultant

BSc Forestry (US) Hon Business Administration (US) Vice-President Of Southern African Institute Of Forestry (SAIF) Braam worked as Assistant District Forest Officer for the Department of Forestry in Forestry and Conservation Management at Tsitsikamma Regional Office in Humansdorp. He then spent two years working for CPA Nature Conservation before moving back to Dept. of Forestry in Cape Town, from where he was transferred to SAFCOL and later to MTO Forestry (Pty) Ltd as Area Manager for Boland Plantations. During the 16 years in line management he was exposed to various aspects of commercial forestry from seedling to sawmill. Between 2005 and 2017 Braam worked as Forestry Risk Manager for MTO. After 35 years in corporate forestry, he started consulting on wildfires including fire investigations, fire litigation, technical forestry related work and training.

What is an Ecological Impact Assessment?

Ecological impact assessment, or biodiversity impact assessment, is the study of the different aspects of the natural environment that may be affected by a project, plan, policy or programme to determine the potential impact on the natural environment to avoid or reduce negative impacts and loss of species, biodiversity or ecosystem function.

What is an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Environmental Impact assessment is the assessment of the ecological, social and economic impacts or consequences of a project, plan, policy or programme prior to its implementation to avoid or reduce negative impacts and enhance benefits of the project, plan, policy or programme.

Why are ecology surveys required?

Ecology surveys are the basis of ecological impact assessment and are required to inform the various specialists involved in the ecological impact assessment on the aspects of the natural environment to be affected by a project, plan, policy or programme. 

What is rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation is the active process of repair to a natural environment to restore the ecosystem function of the environment to a condition close to its pre-disturbance state.
